SIP calculation assumptions and return convention

The SIP calculator estimates a series of equal monthly investments using an annuity-due future-value formula, which assumes each contribution is made at the beginning of a monthly period. It uses the entered annual return as a nominal planning rate divided by 12. Other calculators may convert an effective annual return to an equivalent monthly rate, so results can differ even when the same annual percentage is displayed.

Worked example

At ₹5,000 per month for five years and a 12% nominal annual assumption, total contributions are ₹3,00,000 and the projected maturity value is approximately ₹4.12 lakh using beginning-of-month contributions. This is an illustration, not a mutual-fund return forecast.

Mutual-fund returns are market-linked and neither fixed nor guaranteed. Compare multiple return scenarios, consider costs and taxes, and do not select a fund merely because a calculator displays a large future value.

Frequently asked questions

Does a SIP calculator guarantee returns?

No. It illustrates compounding using an assumed rate; actual mutual-fund returns vary.

Why can two SIP calculators show different results?

They may use beginning- versus end-of-month contributions or nominal versus effective annual-rate conversion.

Is the invested amount the same as maturity value?

No. Invested amount is the sum of contributions; maturity value also includes the modeled gain or loss.

Plan a SIP by goal, not by a promise

People often ask how much monthly SIP may be needed for a target such as ₹1 crore. Enter the target period and an assumed—not guaranteed—return, then test a lower-return scenario as well. Compare the result with the step-up SIP calculator if you expect contributions to rise over time.
