Start with the decision, not the product

Define the goal, date, required amount and flexibility. Emergency savings and expensive debt usually need separate treatment before long-term investing. Investment selection comes after the objective and risk capacity are clear.

Asset allocation

Asset allocation divides money among assets such as equities, high-quality bonds and cash. The appropriate mix depends on time horizon, ability to tolerate losses, income stability and liquidity needs. Diversification reduces concentration risk but cannot eliminate market loss.

Contributions and compounding

Regular contributions can reduce dependence on choosing one entry date. Compounding means returns can generate further returns, but actual market returns vary. Test more than one return assumption and include fees, taxes and inflation where relevant.

Rebalancing framework

Choose a review schedule or tolerance band in advance. Rebalancing means restoring the intended allocation by directing new contributions or selling overweight assets. Consider taxes and transaction costs before trading.

Behaviour during volatility

Avoid changing a long-term plan solely because of headlines. Keep an investment-policy note covering the goal, allocation, contribution schedule, review frequency and conditions that justify a change. A fall in price is not proof that an asset is undervalued.

Review checklist

Has the goal changed? Is the time horizon shorter? Is the emergency fund adequate? Has risk capacity changed? Are fees still reasonable? Is the portfolio concentrated? Are beneficiaries and records current? This guide is educational, not personalised advice.
