Formula: Corpus = Monthly expense ×12 × Years × inflation adjustment / (return – inflation)

Example: Want Rs1L/month today, retire in 25y, inflation 6%, return 8% post-retirement, live 25y after retirement:

  • Rs1L today = Rs4.29L after 25y at 6% inflation
  • Need Rs4.29L/month ×12 months ×25 years = Rs12.87Cr nominal, but with 8% return corpus needed Rs3.2Cr today value

Our calculator does this math.

How Much SIP for Retirement?

Need Rs3.2Cr in 25 years at 12%:

  • Monthly SIP needed: Rs15,000/month
  • Invested: Rs15k×300 months = Rs45L
  • Future: Rs3.2Cr
  • Gain: Rs2.75Cr

If start late, need more: Need Rs3.2Cr in 15y at 12% = Rs63k/month SIP (4x more).

Steps

  1. Calculate monthly expense today (Rs1L)
  2. Adjust for inflation till retirement (6% for 25y = 4.29x)
  3. Calculate corpus needed for retirement years (25y)
  4. Calculate SIP needed to reach corpus
  5. Start SIP, increase 10% yearly, review yearly
