How XIRR handles irregular cash flows
XIRR finds the annual discount rate that makes the net present value of dated cash flows equal to zero. Unlike CAGR, it accounts for the exact timing and amount of multiple deposits and withdrawals. Cash invested is normally entered as negative and money received as positive.
XIRR may have no solution or more than one mathematical solution when cash-flow signs change several times. The result is an annualized estimate and does not by itself measure risk, taxes or investment quality.
